This red arbutus dominate the foreground because of colour and size, but contained within the space are 3 other darker arbutus trees whose top branches form a shape, a dory boat. This harkens back to my days on the East Coast but also references wood as a material of construction for some boats. The shape is not a functional boat but a suggestion. A man-made mode of transportation. A carrier. An ark. A safe haven.
This new series positions the arbutus trees against the clear tonal background of a sky. The lack of horizon line modifies the image as a landscape and opens it up to different interpretations, one of which is the internal structures of the human cardiovascular system. An external reflection of an internal formation.
